Community Action of the Franklin, Hampshire, and North Quabbin Regions, Inc. (Community
Action) provides social and advocacy services to over 25,000 people each year
in Franklin and Hampshire Counties and the North Quabbin region of Massachusetts.
Community Action is the largest human service agency in our region. Our diverse
services include information and referral; nutrition assistance; Head Start, child
care, child care provider training and parent education; youth peer leadership,
adventure programs, health education and anti-violence training; fuel assistance
and energy conservation; family and economic literacy; school and court-based
mediation services; housing search assistance; HIV prevention; and special programs
for women and homeless persons.
The role of Community Action has changed over time as the needs of the region
have changed, and the agency has grown tremendously. Community Action is now an
"umbrella" agency that provides the overall leadership, policy guidance, coordination,
and support necessary to successfully manage a wide array of programs, 40 at 30
sites administered through nine departments. With an annual budget of over $20
million and over 280 employees, Community Action has become the principal anti-poverty
and social service agency for Franklin County and a major agency in the North
Quabbin region.
Our mission is simple: to help the entire community by promoting economic justice
and improving the quality of life for people with low income. We accomplish our
mission by: offering support services and providing basic needs to which all people
have a right; developing opportunities for people with low income; increasing
public awareness about the challenges that many people with low income face; ensuring
that people with low income provide leadership in the decisions that affect their
lives; engaging many voices in promoting human rights and economic justice; and
advocating for policies that support people who live in poverty.
A nonprofit organization founded in 1965, Community Action receives most of its
funds from state and federal sources. We also receive funds from local grants,
private foundations, individual donations, in-kind gifts, fees and the United
Way.
